Best Habit Tracking Apps in 2026: Habitica vs HabitQuest vs Streaks vs Everyday

Full disclosure up front: I built HabitQuest. So instead of pretending to be neutral, I'm going to do something more useful. I'll tell you exactly who each app is best for, including when you should NOT use mine.

I've personally used all four of these for at least a month each. Here's what actually matters.

The 30-second answer

Pick Streaks if you're already consistent and just want a beautiful counter. Pick Everyday if you want dead-simple visual tracking on the web. Pick Habitica if you want a full RPG with a big community and don't mind complexity. Pick HabitQuest if streaks and guilt are the exact reason you've quit every other habit app, especially if you have ADHD.

Streaks: the minimalist champion

Streaks is a polished iOS app built around one idea: don't break the chain. You pick up to 24 tasks, and the app counts consecutive days.

What it does well: gorgeous design, deep Apple Health integration, zero learning curve. If you're a naturally consistent person who wants a scoreboard, this is the best pure tracker on this list.

The catch: the entire motivational model IS the streak. Miss one day and your 47-day chain resets to zero. For some people that's motivating. For a lot of us, a broken streak is the moment we delete the app. If you've lived that cycle, the problem isn't your discipline, it's the mechanic.

Everyday: the simple grid

Everyday is basically a digital Seinfeld calendar: a grid of days that fills with color as you complete habits. Works on web, mobile, everywhere.

What it does well: the visual chain is satisfying, it's cheap, and there's nothing to learn. Great for tracking one or two keystone habits.

The catch: same streak psychology as Streaks, with less polish. And there's no reward for effort beyond the grid itself. When motivation dips, an empty square just sits there judging you.

Habitica: the original habit RPG

Habitica turned habits into an RPG back in 2013: you have a pixel-art avatar, you earn XP and gold, you fight bosses with a party.

What it does well: the party system creates real accountability, the community is huge, and it's free. If your friends use it, that alone is a reason to join.

The catch: Habitica punishes you. Miss your dailies and your character literally takes damage and can die, which can wipe progress. For neurotypical completionists that's a fun stake. For anyone prone to shame spirals, it turns a rough week into a game-over screen. The interface is also showing its age, and setup is genuinely confusing.

HabitQuest: the anti-guilt RPG (mine)

HabitQuest is what I built after burning out on all three of the above. The core idea: your habits become quests in an ongoing story, and missing a day is simply not punished. No streak resets, no character damage, no shame screens. Your character just picks up where you left off.

What it does well: AI turns any habit ("do laundry") into a narrative quest, there's a full D&D-style campaign layer where your daily habits are your character's downtime actions, a world map that unlocks regions as you show up, and party play with a DM dashboard. It's built explicitly for ADHD and neurodivergent brains: novelty, dopamine, and zero punishment.

The catch: it's new and built by one person (me). The community is tiny compared to Habitica. If you want social accountability at scale today, Habitica wins. If you want polish and simplicity, Streaks wins. I'm honest about that.

How to actually choose

Ask yourself one question: what happened the last time you broke a streak?

If you shrugged and started again the next day, congratulations, you have the temperament for Streaks or Everyday, and they'll serve you well.

If you felt like garbage, avoided opening the app, and eventually deleted it, then streak-based trackers are actively working against your brain. You need a system where missing a day is a non-event. That's Habitica without the death mechanic, which is exactly the gap HabitQuest was built to fill.
